The Community Associates Research and Lecture Series 2008–2009

The Art Institute recently acquired a superb print of Steichen’s Self-Portrait with Camera, c. 1917, enhancing its collection of photographs by this innovative American artist. Unlike his better-known 1902 self-portrait in which Steichen presents himself romantically as a painter, the later image shows him posing with his camera, positioning himself as a Modern artist. Joel Smith, curator of photography at the Princeton University Art Museum, is the major scholar working on Steichen today.

This lecture is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Community Associates of the Art Institute of Chicago.
