Call for Active and Supporting Members


Backspace – Peoria’s newest artists’ collective and experimental exhibition space is looking for Active and Supporting Members to help support and expand our programs of exhibitions and events. Membership is by invitation and application and are accepted year-round.

Active Members are responsible for maintaining and running the gallery.

Active Member Duties:
• Monthly dues
• Working during show openings
• Gallery sitting (during open hours)
• Attendance at all member meetings

Active Member Benefits:
• Exhibition opportunities in Frontspace throughout the year
• Proposing shows and events / opportunities to curate shows
• Participation in a Members Show in the main gallery (once per year)
• Opportunities for publication and participation in WORD events.
• Connections with Artist Galleries in Chicago

Active Members Dues:
• $20 per month or volunteering for 5 hours a month as a Gallery Attendant on Saturdays

Applying for Active Membership:
Artists and writers applying to become active members need to e-mail the following to
• Portfolio of 10 -20 images and/or link to a website
• Letter of Intent
• Resume
• Artist’s Statement
• Writers applying should include at least two short examples of their work.

Supporting Members contribute membership fees that support the programs offered and costs of running the exhibition space. If you are interesting in becoming a Supporting Member please e-mail us at

Supporting Member Dues:
• $40 per month

Backspace is a center for new ideas in a radically changing world.  We provide an outlet for creative expression that is integral to a healthy society, and promote civic engagement locally and globally. We are dedicated to fostering innovative, risk-taking contemporary art and cultural scholarship through exhibitions, “Marginalia” lectures, and other events and programming. Our space is a forum for exhibiting, discussing, and interpreting works ranging from traditional plastic arts to performance and new media. We are committed to expanding the cultural vocabulary within central Illinois while actively engaging in the myriad discourses within contemporary art.
